The ELCHK Joint-School Events (2016-17)

As one of the initiators of this event, I am very thrilled to witness that all the incredible hard work of 11 ELCHK schools have come to fruition. As a matter of fact, this is a remarkable breakthrough on different levels: For ELCHK, this is unprecedented that 11 ELCHK primary and secondary schools have collaborated to organise a concert from scratch; on the other hand, not only has this concert provided a great opportunity for students to perform, but it has also provided a wonderful platform for 11 ELCHK schools to have exchange in the musical realm to perform together, to appreciate music and to learn from each other in planning, rehearsal and performance.

Personally, I am very delighted that many different parties from 11 ELCHK have worked incredibly hard towards the same goal and without any of them, this amazing event wouldn’t have come true. First and foremost, I am grateful to ELCHK School Education Department which has made incredible effort in promoting many educational events. I’d also like to thank all the principals from these 11 ELCHK primary and secondary schools for their committed long-term vision and for propelling the completion of this unprecedented concert.

Secondly, I’d also like to thank all music teachers from those 11 ELCHK schools, who have played the pivotal role in the event—they have made an remarkable effort in song selection, musical arrangement and rehearsal. I specially appreciate their incredible work in putting together students from different schools with varied talents and styles to perform, which takes a lot of time and teamwork—through this collaboration, I have witnessed their amazing professionalism and passion which I greatly appreciate.

Last but not least, I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work of all administrative personnels and stage technicians who have sorted out all the logistic and technical issues so the concert could run smoothly.

The first ELCHK Joint-School Concert is established beacuase of a teacher's dream. I am very honoured to be one of the coordinators of this grand event.

It all began from a conversation between Mr. Fung and I. He told me that a music teacher from his school wanted to organize a joint-school music concert in order to enhance communication among ELCHK teachers and students. The music teacher was willing to undertake this challenging task too. After that, we shared this idea with other principals during the School Heads Association meeting. This is how the first ELCHK Joint-School Concert was born after getting their unanimous support. The venture at first seemed to be an impossible task because of the limited time frame and interruption of the summer holidays. However, with the dedication and efforts from our enthusiastic music teachers, we made the impossible mission possible. At the beginning we were unsure on how to organize the concert. However, Mr. Ching, from ELCHK Lutheran Academy, helped leadthe discussions so that different ideas and opinions could be gathered in order to achieve our common goal. That's why we were able to collaborate, and finally succeed in delivering this music concert to you all. We not only have to thank our music teachers for their wonderful music knowledge, we also need to show our gratitude towards our administrative team for their contribution in helping to solve any problems we have encountered along the way. Without them, this music concert would not have been as successful as it is.

Today’s concert is not only a platform to show how talented our students are, it also shows that our teachers are passionate and well-driven in educating our next generation. As educators I hope that we can continue to work hard to fullfill our education dream.

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (PHILIPPIANS 4:13)

Let us praise the Lord, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong (ELCHK) Joint School Concert – When Amigo meets Ami will be performed in public on 17th December. The concert involves eleven ELCHK primary and secondary schools.

Since our establishment, all ELCHK schools are given the same vision and mission that we provide quality education to nurture the young. We seek to promote all-round education and emphasise the importance of the arts. So, together with the skills and techniques covered in the curriculum, we also develop our students’ ability to appreciate visual art through the organisation of an annual joint school exhibition.

Visual art is just one element of the art curriculum. Music is another key constituent. Accordingly, we design to have the Joint School Visual Art Exhibition and Joint School Concert on alternate years. Henceforth, the 1st Joint School Concert will be on stage soon with the organising committee having been already established.

After a long journey, racking our brains in discussions and meetings with all the schools’ committee members, we finally made up our mind to co-ordinate performances of different schools and the concert rundown was devised alongside a detailed plan for promotion and tickets. All in all, we tried our best to ensure that the concert is run smoothly and splendidly.

We firmly believe that this joint school concert enables our students to express themselves through music, whilst encouraging responsibility and cooperation. The variety of aesthetic encounters nourishes their souls and enriches their existence. Furthermore, the concert will unite audiences and performers through joyous moments.

This platform provided for students, to have an intention to practise and show their potential, is echoed within our school, Ma On Shan Lutheran Primary School. Our music programme enjoys great variety. Violin, flute, recorder, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, saxophone and various percussion instruments, such as African drums, are all taught, and have combined to establish our school orchestra. Furthermore, we have harp and hand roll piano lessons conducted in English and we recently introduced Chinese opera and vocal classes. The 1st ELCHK Joint School Concert – When Amigo meets Ami, is a golden opportunity for all our ELCHK schools’ students to showcase the fruits of their learning and enrich their own performing experiences encouraging a positive learning attitude among the young musicians.

Last, but certainly not least, we are looking forward to this lighthearted and rejoiceful moment, as we preach the grace of God through music.

The 1st ELCHK Joint-School Concert

This is the very first time that 11 ELCHK schools have joined force together to organise a musical event like this. Looking back, at the beginning, it did take plenty of time for us to meet to plan the details of this event, but later on, we were all enjoying the process of making this unprecedented concert come true.

I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible hard work of different parties without whom this concert wouldn’t have been realised. Firstly, I am truly grateful to all the professional music teachers for their passion and professionalism; in order not to interrupt students’ rehearsal, they rearranged their own schedule so they could meet to discuss the details of the event. Among the music teachers, I’d also like to thank Mr Nicholas Ching, who has done an amazing job in making such an incredible musical arrangement for the concert.

I am also greatly appreciative of all the principals of these 11 ELCHK schools for their precious time in attending the meetings and their supports and encouragement to their staff. Last but not least, I’d like to thank all the administrative teachers for their meticulous preparation and arrangement in the concert’s logistic matters; I am also grateful to the theatrical technicians for their hard work in ensuring the smooth operation of the concert.

Mr. Nicolas CHING

Music Director of
The 1st ELCHK Joint-School Concert

In fact, the initial idea of organising this concert started two and a half years ago. Back then, I reckoned it would be great for different music teachers from different schools under the same church to meet and to produce music together. I also believed that young musicians would definitely musically grow if they had the opportunity to meet with young musicians to jam music together and to learn from each other. Eventually, in early 2016, principals and music teachers from different ELCHK schools sat together to turn this impossible-seeming idea into reality.

As a musician, it gives me a thrill to be able to participate in this concert, and it is a very interesting experience to meet with other music teachers to produce music together. I am convinced that this concert will be a lot of fun even though it takes a lot of hard work for music teachers, conductors, coaches and music students. Personally, I feel sorry for the music teachers as we are doing this voluntarily, but at the same time I am also incredibly thankful to them because we have put different repertoires together to produce something amazing.

I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to many parties without whom this concert wouldn’t have come true. First all of, I’d like give thanks to the Lord for this great opportunity and for making this concert come true. I’d also like to thank all musical talents including all the music teachers, conductors as well as music students who have worked very hard for this concert. I am also grateful for all the principals and vice principals from these 11 ELCHK schools for their incredible support for this event, not to mention the administrative staff and janitors for handling all the logistic work.
